Xavier School Welcomes man's best friend, the Dog. It's that time of the year when students look forward to the much awaited event, the Chinese Spring Festival, which was celebrated on January 29. Images that come to mind are the dragon and lion dance, eating of tikoy, firecrackers, “angpao”, red lanterns, red and gold writings and decorations. Students also associate this with school activities that help strengthen their identity and make them proud to be Chinese.
The Chinese Department launched the opening of its week long celebration on the 31st of January 2006. Definitely, there was something new to watch out for on that day, since it was widely-participated in by the grade school students with their exciting presentations. The Nursery, Prep, Grades 1 to 3 students had colorful dance numbers while the Grades 5 to 7 students showed their versatility in their sign language performances. The highlight of the program was the Dragon Dance performed by our very own High School students.
However, as early as December 2005, the celebration already started with a focus on the development of Chinese literacy through the different contests such as Spelling, Pinyin, Penmanship, Drawing Card-making, Poster-making and Search for Radicals. These contests were participated in by the Grades 1 to 7 students. The works of the winners in these contests are posted on the panels along the open dining hall.

Just like in the past years, activities have been prepared to make the students realize that learning Chinese can be fun, too. These activities seek to sustain the interest of the students in learning Chinese, reorient the students with their Chinese culture and make them realize that theirs is a unique cultural heritage. Each grade level had its own Chinese Day celebration with fun and engaging activities like the Quiz Bee, Chinese games, BINGO game, Storytelling, Paper folding, Bookmark making, Choral singing contests and Film viewing. And what is a celebration without food! Students from Grades 4 to 7 brought Chinese food to share with their classmates and teachers in the classroom during recess time. It was a chance to celebrate the Spring Festival as one community in the spirit of cooperation, camaraderie, and sportsmanship!
