XAVERIAN'S CORNER

Pen and Paper No More

Posted Friday, 03-Feb-2006 7:57 AM

Like many other departments in Xavier School , the Information Technology Center (ITC) continually strives to improve for the benefit of the whole Xavier community. One of the most recent developments in the ITC is the rise of the ITC Logging System (ILS). With the help of H4A student programmers, Rodrick Simon Tan and Wilhansen Joseph Li, the paper and pencil data gathering technique has been finally replaced with a more efficient computer assisted system.

The ILS, being called a “system”, is comprised of two programs which can each be run independently, without the presence of the other. The client program, shown in the screenshot (see illustration) provides the interface required for the input. The other program, on the other hand is the administration program, which provides the ability to configure the system and the tools needed to manipulate the data recorded.

While Rodrick did the work of quality testing and creating the client program including its design and interface, Wilhansen took care of creating the administration program and designing the storage of data.

Before armed with tally sheets and pen, ITC personnel would position themselves near the ITC entrance to keep track of the users from every batch. An hour after lunch, the ITC staff adds up the tally and keeps the papers for further tallying. However, with the dawn of the ILS, tallying is made a lot easier. With just a few clicks on the keyboard, needed statistical data can be obtained.

The birth of the ILS would have not been possible without the following whom the programmers thank profusely: Mrs. Jessica Demegilio, H4 computer teacher, Mrs. Ruth de Luna, ITS Coordinator, Mr. Jing Bautista, ITC staff, and the opensvn.csie.org webmaster.

Because of the great turnout of the ILS, the programmers are ready to embark in another project. In the near future, Rodrick and Wilhansen see that students and faculty who wish to use school computers will no longer need to write down their information on paper and surrender their ID. They picture members of the community using a username, a password and an ID number to be able to use school computers, just like in an Internet Cafe.

About the programmers:

Wilhansen Joseph Li is a student of High 4A and is    knowledgeable in C++, Perl and VB.NET. In the project, he contributed to the creation of the Administration Panel.  Currently, he is working on multiple projects, including our next project for the school. Other projects include Ethereal, a 3D RPG/Turn-Based/Strategy Game which won't be finished until after a few years and Pr3th,

another game which is a prequel to Ethereal and will be

released either in January or February.

Rodrick Simon Tan is also a student of High 4A and is a Microsoft Certified Professional for VB.NET. In the project, he contributed to the interface of the ILS, its basic functionality and majority of its documentation. Currently, he is studying database systems and working on a few projects including the next project for the school.
