HIGHLIGHTS

A Day in the Life of Scott Lee-Chua

Posted Thursday, 23-Feb-2006 2:10 PM

Scott Lee-Chua of Grade 1 - A is a very talented boy.  He is the son of Dr. Queena Lee-Chua, professor at the Ateneo de Manila, author and columnist.  She is credited with spearheading a movement to make Mathematics and Science more fun and relevant to everyday living.

Last Jan. 30, 2006, mother and son were invited to the culminating activity of the Grades 1 and 2 Mathinik Club entitled “An Afternoon of Mathemagic.”  The event was held at the Grade School Learning Resource Center.  Several teachers and middle-level administrators were also on hand to participate as the Lee-Chuas enthralled the audience with their expertise.  Scott performed what appeared to be magical feats that the audience were given opportunities to figure out.  Needless to say, nobody was able to reveal the secret of the tricks.  Dr. Lee-Chua later explained that all of her son’s tricks were based on basic mathematical scientific principles.  The mother and son team went through the tricks, clarifying the logic behind each one.  Dr. Lee-Chua ended by saying that the tricks were so simple that even a Grade 1 student could perform them successfully.  Everybody, however, disagreed that Scott Lee-Chua was your average grade 1 student.

Aside from Math and Science, Scott is also very interested in the arts, history and literature.  He placed second in a drawing contest in connection with the movie, “Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe.”  Contestants were asked to draw Koko, the mascot of Nestle’s breakfast cereal Koko Krunch, in their favorite scene from the movie.  Scott won a certificate worth one thousand pesos of Narnia books from Power Books.

After having studied the life of Dr. Jose Rizal in his Social Studies class and inspired by “Splendid as the Sun: The Youth of Jose,” a book given by his mother, Scott wrote the following poem:

The Filipinos' Inspiration

The Spaniards attack without mercy
But the Filipinos' light shines.
Even when the light is dim,
We attack the Spaniards' rule
And fight till we get back the land we own.
The Filipinos have hear and flag,
The Spaniards have brutality and force.
But as long as we have mind and spirit
We will never give up.

Scott Lee-Chua is not your typical first grader, but he serves as an example to everybody that excellence in any field is achievable with the right attitude, effort and discipline as well as the loving support of family.
