In celebration of the Spring Festival or more commonly known as Chinese New Year on January 29, the High School celebrated the Chinese Week from January 30 to February 3.

According to Ms Hazel Wong, Chinese teacher, for this year’s Culminating Activity . each section prepared a thematic scene in their classrooms to create an atmosphere conducive to conversing in Chinese.

For instance, some sections transformed their classrooms into restaurants, fortune-telling booths, party venues or even airline companies! The evaluators, which consisted of parents, Chinese advanced students and teachers, asked every student about their skit to test for Chinese communication skills.

Each section’s teamwork and creativity were pooled together, including all the things they have learned throughout the year. While the High 1 and High 4 students had this activity on January 31, High 2 and High 3 students had theirs on January 30.

Observing the theme of Chinese New Year, every section utilized their ideas and imagination for the annual Bulletin Board Contest . Each section was given sufficient time to design their bulletin boards until they were judged by several teachers and administrators.

There were several classroom activities prepared for both advance and regular students. For the regular students, each pair of students was tasked to make lanterns from red Japanese paper. Meanwhile, the advance students in every year have storytelling and composition-writing contests . They were also tasked to be evaluators for the Culminating Activity in their respective year levels.

The H2 Advanced Class also had a different twist of Chinese art appreciation. They had calligraphy sessions with Mrs Benita Tan, a Chinese teacher who is an expert in Chinese calligraphy.

On the last day of the Chinese week celebration, the whole student body participated in the first all-Chinese mass, presided over by Fr Johnny Go , SJ, and concelebrated by Fr Art Borja, SJ, Fr. Guy Guibelondo, SJ and Fr Zhang Deshun, SJ. Right after the said event, the whole High School had a program sponsored by the HS Chinese Department.
