Last Friday, February 3, the High School Chinese Department ended the Chinese Week Celebration with a bang with a program right after the Chinese Mass in the High School Gym. With everyone from the Chinese Department and the performers wearing Chinese attire, every student was enthusiastic to wait for each number to be performed. The show which was hosted by Ms Demi Tian of the High School Chinese Department and Thompson Tang (H3B) proved to be a very entertaining and meaningful one.

The celebration started with the dragon dance by our very own Xavier Dragon Dancers. As the dragon paraded and dashed around the gym along with clashing of cymbals and the banging of drums, the HS gym was obviously brought to a festive mood.

After Christopher Yu (H1A) performed a solo song number on “Long De Chuan Ren ” and “ Dong Fang Zhi Zhu,” Chinese-attired students from our neighboring Chen Kuang High School performed a traditional Chinese fan dance, which was very well-applauded by the audience.

Subsequently, High 4 students, Christopher Yu, Rainier Tiam-Lee, Neilsen Bernardo, Jet Siy and Walther Hontiveros of H4A, TJ Simeon of H4B, Marvin Ong and James Lee of H4I, performed a jovial medley of songs. The presentation was furthered spiced by the participation of two English teachers, Ms Donnalyne Lampa and Mr Christian Bumatayo. Songs presented were “Dui Mian De Nu Hai," “Yue Liang Dai Biao Wo De Xin," “Peng You Bie Ku,” and “Chen Xin Ying Xiong."

After H4’s buoyant number, the High 2 students from the Chinese advance class ( Kurt Tanyu, Ryan Yeung and Andrew Yap of H2A, Kent Tong and Christian Ang of H2B) interpreted a famous Chinese poem of “Ming Yue Ji Shi You” through a short role-play. This was followed by an impressive performance from the members of the Shaolin Kungfu Club that hyped the stage with an exhibition of Kung Fu moves. As finale of  this number, Dexter Chung, an alumnus of Xavier School and Kung Fu club moderator, presented an outrageous move of breaking a steel bar into pieces by pounding it on his head and popping a bottle open with his bare hands.

Chinese teachers Jimmy Go and William Deng sang “Peng You,” just before the whole Chinese Department, led by Chine department chairperson, Mrs Yolly Reyes, sang various Chinese songs.

In between numbers, prizes were also awarded to the winning classes in the various contests during the Chinese Week.

At the end of the celebration, the Chinese teachers showered the audience with candies to welcome the Year of the Fire Dog.
