XAVERIAN'S
CORNER
Reminiscing the Chinese week, I find that the way the High School celebrates it is quite different. Throughout the week, we in the advanced class engaged in many different activities such as essay writing, Chinese poem writing, song practice and the most exciting, acting as judges in our culminating activity while the regular class students had different activities such as setting up shops and engaging in Chinese discussions with the judges.
At first, when I heard that we, the advanced class students under Lao Shi Katherine Ma were going to be judges in our freshman culminating activity, I felt apprehensive since this would be the first time we would be in a way ‘testing’ our peers knowledge of the language. However, while actually going around, my mood changed. I found it to be a colorful event. I felt this way because I found that more or less, all those who I spoke to were able to converse in Mandarin and also, all the creative manners in which they presented the commodities for sale was really interesting.
After the culminating event, we proceeded to writing essays in Chinese. Throughout the rest of the week, we learned more about writing short poems in Chinese and practicing for the Chinese mass.
Generally, for me, the Chinese week was a success and it really taught us what it was like to go around and converse in Mandarin with our fellow batch mates. In the end, I truly learned to appreciate the Chinese language and culture even more.
