As I write this, I can’t help but look back at all the things that I had gone through for the past five months. It seems like only yesterday when I started talking in front of one of the fourth-year classrooms to thirty-six unfamiliar faces as I tried to look as confident as possible when in reality, I was silently questioning my own capabilities.

Even with me setting our committee’s goal of creating the “best Variety Show ever,” I couldn’t help but feel the intense pressure brought about by the enormous responsibility I just took. Back then, I was nervous and scared.

Right now, I just can’t rub off the big smile I have on my face.

The day of the Variety Show started early for the committee, as everyone began preparing the venue for the event in the afternoon. We were all tensed, as was expected, but we still continued working until everything was finally ready.

A few hours before the gates were opened to the public, the committee had its final briefing. Final checks were made and last minute instructions as well as reminders were given to everyone. After a little pep talk, we were all off to our respective posts for the event proper!

The Variety Show itself was everything I hoped it would be. The smooth sounds of bands Popoy Avenue, Khampus, Ferdie Goes to School and Pink Salad Days helped set the mood while the jaw-dropping performances of the ICA Dance Troupe, the Poveda Hardcourt Dancers, the Sayawatha-Miriam Dance Troupe and Dance X heated up the crowd. Student and teacher models in the Folded & Hung and Adidas sponsored Fashion Show ramped like professionals in their branded clothes. Moreover, Xavier’s own Sick Chased delivered an exhilarating performance that will definitely not be forgotten. VJ Hunt Finalists Miguel, Jennifer, Nikki and eventual winner, Jaime lent their talents and joined MTV VJs Claire Olivar and John Joe in hosting the spectacular show. To top it all off, the seven professional bands: Kjwan, Dicta License, Brownman Revival, Orange and Lemons, Urbandub, Hale and Bamboo rendered sizzling performances and definitely gave the crowd its money’s worth.

At the end of the night, we were all exhausted. Most of us were hungry, thirsty, bruised, sleepy, or just plain tired. Even with these, we couldn’t help but laugh and congratulate each other for the great job we had all done. The cheers and roars of the audience drowned out the physical pain we were going through and reminded each and every one of the members of the committee that everyone had a hand in the success of the event.

As for me, I think that this whole experience has made me different somehow. It maybe due to all the sleepless nights, the hours spent for meetings, the cramps I acquired while running frantically, or even the bottles of Red Bull I consumed just to get me going. The reasons for this aren’t really certain, but I am sure of one thing; the experience of PanaXea is one that I would cherish for the rest of my life.
