Sacred Heart of Jesus Mass

The grade school students celebrated the Sacred Heart of Jesus Mass last January 6. Aside from being a First Friday mass for the year 2006, what made it more memorable was that for the first time, the Grade 3 students, who had just recently received their First Communion, were able to take part in the celebration of the mass with the Grade School Community.

The School Director, Fr Johnny Go, S.J. together with the School Chaplain, Fr Art Borja, S.J. celebrated a very solemn mass highlighted by a meaningful homily. The sermon seemed simple but it had a valuable lesson for the grade school students. The homily was about three trees who wanted to end up as grand things. One wanted to be a treasure chest, while the other, a large boat and the last, a cathedral. But all three of them turned out differently from what they had hoped for. The tree who wanted to become a treasure chest became a manger. The second tree became a small boat. And finally, instead of becoming a cathedral, the last tree became a cross. All of them realized that even though they did not become what they had originally wished for, they turned out to be something better than what they could have ever dreamed of. For the first tree, it carried not just ordinary treasures like gold and silver but it carried with it the most valuable treasure of all, Jesus. The second tree realized that it might not be big enough to transport kings, but it was able to bring forth the King of Kings. For the tree who wanted to be a Cathedral, it became something greater, it became a cross. By being a cross, it would not only fulfill its dream of helping people remember God but more than that, it became an instrument for people to pray to Jesus Christ. From this, one would learn that God knows what is best of his children and as his sons and daughters we should trust God completely.

Aside from the homily, another portion that made the mass truly memorable was when the Grade School students were invited to sing a song with the Grade 3 students. The boys from the third grade sang melodiously and even had actions throughout the song. And when the priest finally concluded the mass, everyone present during the celebration of the mass felt enlightened. The Sacred Heart of Jesus was a very meaningful mass not only for the Grade 3 students but also for the entire grade school community for it made us realize that Jesus should be in every aspect of our lives and that we should continuously believe in Him.
