Lian Basketball Tournament Televised!

Will xavier break a two-year
championship drought in the Tiong Lian basketball tournament? Seven schools
are taking part in the 30th Metro Manila Tiong Lian Basketball Association
Tournament - Xavier, two-time reigning titlist St. Stephen's, host Uno,
Chiang Kai Shek, Hope Christian, St. Jude and comebacking Grace Christian.
The games will be telecast on a delayed
basis (by a week) for the next six weeks. The opening-day games (Jan.
7) thus will be shown on Solar Sports cable on Jan. 14, 3-5 p.m.. Other
TV airings are Jan. 21, Feb. 4, Feb. 11, Feb. 18 and Feb. 25, all Saturdays
from 3-5 p.m.
The Xavier games in the single round-robin
preliminary play are vs. CKS, Jan. 7; vs. Hope Christian, Fri Jan. 13
(5:30 p.m.); vs. St. Stephen's, Wed Jan. 18 (5:30 p.m.); vs. St. Jude,
Mon Jan. 23 (7:00 p.m.); vs. Grace Christian, Wed Jan. 25 (5:30 p.m.);
and vs. Uno,Fri Jan. 27 (7:00 p.m.).
The format calls for the No. 1 team after
the elims to be seeded automatically into the semifinals. In the quarterfinals,
it will be No. 2 vs. No. 7, No. 3 vs. No. 6 and No. 4 vs. No. 5 with Nos.
2, 3 and 4 enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage. In the semifinals, the
No. 1 team will play the winner of No. 4 vs. No. 5 quarterfinal contest
with a twice-to-beat advantage while the winner of the No. 2 vs. No. 7
quarterfinal contest will play the winner of the No. 3 vs. No. 6 quarterfinal
contest with the team with the higher seed enjoying a twice-to-beat advantage.
The best-of-three finals will be held on
Feb. 14 and Feb. 16 and, if necessary, Feb. 18.
