The Fr. Rafael Cortina Sports Center will be formally inaugurated and blessed on June 9, 2006, marking the official start of the school’s Golden Jubilee Celebrations.

The main area is the 1,750 sq.m. multi-purpose gym w/ 3 basketball courts and a proscenium-type stage for major school events.  Alongside is a table tennis venue equipped with 8 Stiga tables.  Other major facilities include three Taraflex-matted badminton courts and two competition-level wooden basketball courts with bleacher seating for 1,400 -- all to be completed before the start of SY ’06-’07.

A special feature is a 2-lane rubber matted oval track that runs the entire circumference of the complex.  Already in use is an exercise room with matted flooring and a 240 sq.m. air-conditioned hall, divisible into 4 separate rooms, for meetings and other activities.  It has wall-mounted mirrors that it particularly suited for dance and rehearsal sessions.  The center offers basement parking for 66 cars with an additional 16 slots at the ground level.

Soon to open are two more venues - a 750-sq.m. workout gym which will be managed by one of the country’s leading fitness gyms and a coffee shop.  The center was designed by Architect Jonathan O. Gan (‘84) and incorporates handicap-friendly features like ramps and elevator systems providing easy access to every level.

Built over two years under the supervision of Fr. Santos Mena, the multi-level sports complex is expected to total over P280 million once fully furnished and equipped.  The AAXS has already pledged a generous amount to support this project. Xavier School plans to defray the majority of the cost through a per-venue sponsorship with naming rights.

The sport center facilities are open to the Xavier community and others for a fee during specified times, usually on non-school hours like evenings and weekends.  However, all official school activities shall have priority.  For more information on use of the facilities, please contact the school at 723 0481 loc 435 (Zsa Zsa Yu) or loc 387 (Minette).
