Atty. Ted Bonpin

Posted Thursday, 30-Mar-2006 7:38 AM

Atty. Ted Bonpin finished his grade school and high school in Xavier School. He garnered several awards and was one of the three Xavier Awardees of his grade school class of 1978.

He took up Economics at the University of the Philippines and proceeded to take up Law at the Ateneo de Manila. While at the Ateneo Law School, he was an active member of the Ateneo Human Rights Center. Immediately after taking the bar in 1990, Ted Bonpin volunteered to be the first year-long intern of the Ateneo Human Rights Center where he accepted the invitation of the then Bishop of Basilan  to run its Legal Aid Office and the Justice and Peace Commission of the Prelature of Basilan until 1992 where he coordinated and formed the civil society election watch of the May 1992 nationwide synchronized elections.

Upon returning to Manila, he joined the Haribon Foundation for the Conservation of Natural Resources’ Environmental Law Office, “Tanggol Kalikasan.”  While with Tanggol Kalikasan, his public interest environmental law work gave him the opportunity to work with fisherfolks, farmers, indigenous peoples and other marginalized communities.

In June of 2003, Ted moved to become the first Filipino country director of CARE in the Philippines. CARE stands for Cooperative Assistance and Relief Everywhere and is an international humanitarian non-profit organization operating in over 70 countries worldwide. It opened a country office here in the Philippines in 1949 and was awarded the Magsaysay Award for International Understanding in 1968.

Atty. Bonpin’s expertise is in environmental law, social development, emergency disaster response, empowering dispute management processes and organizational management.
