Turn-over Ceremonies

The turn-over ceremonies, which included a special prayer service, held last March 7, 2006 served as fitting closure of school year 2005-2006 for the Xavier High School community.

Student Council President Casey Lim, who hosted the prayer service said that the school symbols, namely the Philippine flag and the Xavier flag “remind us of our appreciation for and gratitude to our Jesuit roots and Chinese and Filipino heritage.”

Casey then proceeded to address the student body for the final time expressing his appreciation for being allowed to serve the community during his Senior year.

He added that at the start of the school year, he did not know if the teachers and the students would help the Council in its various activities.

“But I was overwhelmed when more than a hundred of you supported the Student Council across its multitude of projects,” said Casey Lim.

He also requested the undergraduates to extend their hand to the incoming Student Council leaders, who were also introduced in the assembly.

Meanwhile, in behalf of Xavier Project DOTA (Donate To Aid), Richard Uy, H4C, thanked everyone for making the student-initiated project a success. More than Php 30,000 was collected during the Ash Wednesday Mass alone, not to mention the outpouring of basic commodities from both the GS and HS units.

ITC Day

Subsequently, the Information Technology Center (ITC) handed out several awards to deserving winners in various categories. The ITC started off with the Bookworm Award, which is given to students who borrowed the most number of books per year level. The winners of the said award are Iroca Co of H1D, Arnold Lin of H2C, Justin Sy of H3B and Jon Lee of H4A.

For the faculty and staff, the same award went to Mr. Romnick Cajigal of the Science Department as the individual winner while the English Department received the plum for the group category.

On the other hand, the Reader Award, which is given to a student who has shown passion for reading, went to Constantine Chung of H3A.

Chinese awards were also given to the student and the teacher who frequently vist and borrow from the Chinese collection. Iroca Co of H1D was awarded the Du Shu Award while Ms. Hazel Wong of the Chinese Department was the recipient of the Jiao Yan Award.

The ITC also recognized the following people and departments: The Filipino department for maximizing the use of the resources in the ITC, Jose Cua of H1A and Brian Ong of H4B for sharing their coin collections, Rodrick Tan and Wilhansen Li of H4A for creating and improving the ITC Logging System, and some Jesuit Fathers and some teachers for unselfishly sharing their personal collection.

 Science Week Awardees

The Science Department also awarded the winners of the various interclass contests held during the Science Week last February 27 to March 3, 2006 with the theme “Science and Technology: Redifining Society.”

For the High 1 Eco Show, the winners were H1E, H1ABC and H1BC as the first, second and third places respectively.

For the High 2 Body Works presentation, H2AB emerged victorious in the ABCD block while H2E won for the EFGH block.

For Chem Magic of the third year students, H3B was triumphant for the ABCD block while H3G won for the EFGH block.

Finally, for the Senior’s Physics Olympiad, H4G, H4D and H4I got the top three honors in that order.

The winners of the Poster-making Contest were also announced with H3A as the champion and H4B and H4E coming in at second and third places, respectively.

More Awards and Recognitions

Several students were also acknowledged for bringing honors to Xavier.

Lorenzo Mangubat of H3C and Thompson Tang of H3D each received the first place in the Photo Essay and Extemporaneous Public Speaking in Filipino categories, respectively, from the Children’s Museum and Library, Inc.

Similarly, Joseph Emmanuel Ang of H3D succeeded in the different bowling events in the First Philippine National Schools Championship. He won the gold for the Single’s, and the silver for the Master’s, thus achieving silver in the overall race. The Xavier Bowling Varsity Team also took home the silver award for the Double’s category and the Gold for the team event.

Tiredness and Successes

Finally, to cap everything that had happened during SY 05-06, High School Principal, Mrs. Jane Cacacho talked about being tired after a fulfilling year.

She called on two perfect examples of people who are called to serve, though tired as they may be, still came out very much filfilled. They are Bro. Joseph Haw, SJ and Bro. Aldrie Lim, SJ. These Jesuit Scholastics have stayed in Xavier for the last two years, but will no longer be with the community for SY 06-07 as they go on to a higher level of formation towards priesthood.

Apart from being a Filipino and a CLE teacher, Bro. Haw and Bro. Lim will be remembered as the charismatic YCLC and commanding COCC moderators, respectively.

The seniors gave their Commandant, Bro. Aldrie Lim, a final salute (pugay kamay) as a form of respect and farewell before they all graduate and move on to college.

Mrs. Cacacho then continued to speak about the two kinds of tiredness. The first one was experienced by those who worked in the various committees of the different school projects. Mrs. Cacacho commented that although these people felt tiresome, they also experienced a sense of fulfillment and satisfaction.

However, the Principal reiterated that not all tiredness are good. There are those who felt tired by being unprepared and mediocre, making their work fruitless and meaningless.

In the end, Mrs. Cacacho posed a challenge for everyone to do during the upcoming summer break, “Reflect on what made you tired during this school year.”
