XAVERIAN'S
CORNER
Jose Timothy Chua is with the English advanced class under the tutelage of Mr. Frederick Perez. This is an essay written as a response to a class discussion stemming from issues found in Romeo and Juliet.
It is said that in this world, only change is constant. The youth of our world testifies this truth.
Not too long ago, kids were different from what they have become. I would see pictures of children hugging their parents, all in smiles, in ancient magazines and newspapers. Ask the elderly and they will all testify that the children of old were closer to their families and God rather than the likes of me. When children would come home in the past, a hot meal and the company of his parents was waiting for his arrival.
Now, majority are greeted by a previously heated platter of chow. I guess I’m in a neglected generation for the warmth of love that once was, no longer is. Sure we’re taken care of physically but our hearts grieve out of disappointment. Disappointed by the kind of love our parents and relatives hand over to us.
I guess we only have ourselves to blame since we demanded freedom and independence from those who we look upon. We pushed ourselves into a dank and dark cave without a light to guide us by. And so we feel our ways, tripping every couple of steps due to our pride. Kids these days are lost. Blinded by pride for our abilities, we are doomed to suffer until we accept the fact that we are not yet ready. Our time will come and until then, we need to stay underneath the cover of the ones who truly love us, our parents and our Lord God.
However, some just cannot accept the truth. So they continue with their experiments. They drink and smoke for they think that those are the signs of adulthood. But in their fun they forget that they have overlooked an important value of being an adult: discipline. Kids these days want more for themselves; more time for play, for fun with friends and with their gadgetry. They rarely think about having time for their families and the Heavenly Father.
I too sometimes become the very being that I hate. I get lost in the moment; I throw away values and move farther from those who love me. I get lost in the cave for I did not bring a light.
