ACADEMICS Grade School THREE-YEAR THRUST The Grade School under the leadership of the Director, Fr. Johnny Go, re-visited its VMG statements. In the series of sessions with the whole faculty and staff of the unit, as well as sessions with the departments and the teams, dialogues were held, points of view passionately advocated regarding the future direction of the school and the unit. The end result, the product of all these sessions is contained in the mandated areas of focus in both the vertical and the horizontal versions. To systematize the unit's achieving the mandated areas of focus, a yearly thrust for the next three years is suggested with an evaluation at the end of each school year. For SY 2002-2003: Competence and Culture Upon analyzing the grade school's performance in the NEAT, CEM and the OLSAT-MAT, it is clear that there is an urgent need to re-examine the academic programs especially in the areas of Filipino and Araling Panlipunan where our students perform below expected norms. The Chinese program also needs revision, as recommended by the committee tasked to evaluate the Chinese program. Revising these programs especially with the view of strengthening the rootedness of the students in their Chinese Filipino heritage, as well as their eventual acceptance of a diversity of cultures in the Philippines, will also, it is hoped make the students more competent and more open to growth. This first year of the cycle concentrates on the revision of the academic programs which will provide the foundations upon which the future changes and the future thrusts will depend. For example, the revision of the CLE program during this first year will lay the foundation for the thrust on Conscience during the second year. The adoption of the Science-Technology-Society curriculum in the science program will in turn prepare the ground for the strengthening of the focus on Comparison for the next year. For SY 2003-2004: Conscience and Compassion Once the academic programs have been revised, the next step would be the strengthening of the programs that will support the formation of Conscience and Compassion. Service, Campus Ministry, AP, CLE the SAP and Guidance will work together to attain these mandated areas of focus. Strengthening the spiritual self will hopefully rise to the societal self of the students. For SY 2004-2005: Character and Community Since Character and Community have been identified as strengths for the unit, it is fitting that these areas be targeted last, during the third year of the cycle. The Guidance program will be the chief vehicle for the attainment of the focus on Character with the class advisers playing crucial roles in the implementation of the program. The training of the main agents concerned will take at least two years. Also, the development of the spiritual self in the previous year will lay the foundations for the developments of the Psycho-emotional self, while the development of the societal self will lay the foundation for the development of the social self. At the end of the three-year cycle, it is suggested that a new cycle be done again. |
