GOLDEN JUBILEE

Xavier Gears Up for the Big Five-O

Next year, Xavier School marks its 50 th anniversary milestone.   To celebrate this event meaningfully, Fr. Johnny Go, School Director, has commissioned a committee composed of alumni, parents, faculty and Jesuits to plan and implement a year-long calendar of events and projects that will bring the entire community together in the spirit of fellowship, thanksgiving and, more importantly, renewal of the ideals that are the core values of a Xavier education.

The Jubilee Steering Committee, chaired by Mr. Hero Yu ('72), has lined up several activities to ensure that the Jubilee Year will not only be a happy and memorable occasion for all members of the Xavier community but will also be an opportunity for everyone to reaffirm the Xavier Spirit of “ men for others ”.

A special Grand Alumni Homecoming in December 2006 is being planned worldwide.   Simultaneous celebrations in Las Vegas, Shanghai, Sydney and Taipei will coincide with the Manila affair and will be digitally linked through the magic of video conferencing to underscore the spirit of unity and kinship among all Xavier alumni across the continental divide.   This is only the first step in the strengthening of the alumni association which aims to establish and link up with local chapters in North America and other parts of the world.

A major highlight of the celebrations will be the recognition of the most outstanding Xavier Alumni of the past five decades.   The idea behind this is to honor the achievements and lives of alumni who embody to a very high degree, the school ideal of being “ men fully alive, endowed with a passion for justice and the skills for development ”.   By their shining example, Xavier School hopes to inspire many more Xaverians to live as “ instruments of change ”.

Other projects proposed include a Jubilee book, a commemorative stamp, a memorial to the school founders, a faculty reunion, an updated alumni directory, an essay writing contest and several other sporting events, civic projects and spiritual activities. Already in the pipeline are special commemorative items for sale, including the Jubilee Wine that will be available by the last quarter of 2005.

Xavier School shall have reached a truly golden moment in its history by 2006.   From its humble beginnings in Echague to its current campus in San Juan housing brand new and refurbished facilities and over 4000 students, Xavier has evolved and grown but has remained steadfast in its mission.   As the school approaches the big five O, the entire Xavier community prepares to celebrate a glorious past and chart a more vibrant and relevant role for the future!

The countdown begins!
